A Spirit of Reflection and Repentance
As we enter into the first days of Lent, let's explore what is at the very heart and spirit of the Lenten season; reflection and repentance.
What do we mean by "reflection" in the life of a Christian? What are we reflecting on or pondering?
I believe this is a sacred time, set aside for self-examination and analysis of the conditions of our hearts and minds. By taking a hard look at ourselves in the mirror, we prepare for Easter through an honest assessment of our spiritual health. This is accomplished through continual prayer and various forms of fasting, which humbles us so God can show us who we really are. Honest self-reflection will identify areas of sin which must be dealt with. Fasting leaves no doubt as to what is truly more important in our lives, the flesh or the spirit!
And what exactly is "repentance"? One thing for sure is that repenting of one's sins is extremely important to God. The word "repent" appears nearly 100 times in the Bible. Hear the words of the Apostle Peter.
"Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord" Acts 3:9
How wonderful is it that God promises that He will forgive us of all our sins if we only confess them and turn away from continuing in them!
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
Let's embrace the spirit of the Lenten season by devoting ourselves to honest spiritual self-examination, identifying the sin in our lives, confessing it and turning away from it! If we do so, God promises His rich blessings to us in this life and life eternal with Him in His kingdom!
